So, Saturday I got a job! Well, not really. I volunteer for now, but I am a vehicle cleaner at my local friendly dealer. To happy to actually have something to do after school!

wait you volunteer to wash cars at a dealer who charges money to it’s clients??

you do know that they are taking advantage of you right?

Like Wacko said, we think the dealer is taking advantage of you. However you can probably parlay it into a paying position. Just be great at your job for 1-2 months and tell them you need to be paid for your time and your work. Even minimum wage would be an uptick but at least you would be compensated.

Congrats. Hopefully you can parlay this into a paid gig at the dealer if things go well.

High school? I’d assume you’re at least earning volunteer hours, then? Do it for as long as you need to earn a graduation cord or whatever your main goal is, and then tell them that you’d be happy to stay, but that it can’t be a volunteer position anymore and you’d need to start earning a paycheck.

That’s just my advice, but I’m glad you’re happy with it as it is!

I’m the kind of guy that doesn’t like to be paid. Volunteer work is good right now. At least I have something to do.

No, I don’t want to make money. I think it’s not necessary yet. I have no need for cash.

I don’t like getting paid. It just seems too nice of them. And yes, I hope I am earning volunteer hours. 1 so far, I think.

Well done fella.

I clean cars to relax for free but I have a job to pay the bills.

I hope it turns into a paid job when your ready.

It’s one of those jobs that can be as quick and easy to as long and arduous as it can get. It’s finding what’s right for you but enjoy it in the mean time till you figure out what you want to do.

I hope to become a mechanic there. I am a good friend with the owner of the dealer, and I bet I could learn mechanics pretty easily down there.

I’m going to echo some of the other opponauts and say you need to either parlay this into a paid gig, or, get something in exchange for your labor. If they’re not going to train you to do a paid job then you’re making it hard for those who want to get paid to work for a living.

You may not need cash now, but as it is, you’re the dealer’s slave. Get some serious training that people would pay for or otherwise you’re perpetuating our descent from capitalism back to feudalism.

Ye’, get to know the mechanics and let them know your willing to learn but make sure you know when to step out of the way. Be keen but not over eager to the point your in the way.

I know you’re willing to do the work for free to get a foot in the door, but your “employer” may be violating labor laws unintentionally (hopefully not intentionally) by not paying you for the work. Not really a risk for you, of course, since if it is a violation you would likely end up getting money as a result (although probably losing your job as well, so that would be a bummer).

OK, I really don’t care if I am making money, and I wouldn’t mind a buck per car, as a salesman offered me. They are short on workers and I am friend with everyone in the dealer, including the owner. I’m just happy for a dealership T-shirt and access into employee only areas. The owner has a F355, Thing, and Carrera S, so seeing those 3 makes it up 100% instead of pay.

You’re friendly with everyone in the dealer, including the owner. If you’re just working to be around the cars and into the employee-only areas you’re not getting much out of it. I know it’s exciting to be around exotic cars, but at the end of the day, what are you getting from it?

When you’re in there, find one of the service techs - preferably a master mechanic - and learn from that person. Learn all you can. Because your labor is all you can offer at the very beginning of your career, if you’re not getting a paycheck you need to get something . Otherwise you’re free labor. Free labor is called slavery. Seriously - get some training, or something. Because he could easily hire anyone else at minimum wage to do what you do. Use your relationship with the dealer staff to gain knowledge and skills. Otherwise you’re just a chump.

Good lad.

Only I’ve had my fairshare of likeable people who want to learn and ask questions only to reach a point my work has almost ground to a halt and I’m actively avoiding them.

I’m sure your going to do well and achieve everything you want to achieve. Good luck fella and again, well done.

Willful free labor is volunteer work. Unwillful free labor is slavery. And I might get to clean and vacuum the boss’s Huracan sometime soon.

I get that. Nothing wrong with what you’re doing and it’s something plenty of people have done before. Just saying the shop might be running a risk as labor laws are pretty restrictive on these types of arrangements. But if you don’t mind it’s not really a problem.

On one hand, there’s nothing wrong with it. You want to do the work and you judge it to be worth your time and labor even if you don’t get paid. Nothing immoral there, it’s not like you’re being forced.

On the othet hand, we have labor laws in the US (I’m assuming that’s where you are, so if not this part doesn’t apply) that regulate how people can be employed. The big one is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). I used to handle FLSA cases at my last job. This oversimplifies what the FLSA says, but basically, with only a few narrow exceptions, everyone who does work for someone else’s benefit is required to be paid at least minimum wage. I don’t know all the facts of your situation but I would wager that you don’t fall into an exception for volunteering at a for-profit business.

Of course, it’s up to you to take action on your FLSA rights being violated, so if you’re fine with not getting paid that’s your call. But as the business owner, I know I wouldn’t want to run that risk and I’d sure as heck be paying everyone that was working for me at least minimum wage. Most of the time, FLSA lawsuits are NOT cheap to deal with.

But as I said - it’s really your call as to whether it’s worth it for you.
